From Village to City

Urbanization in the Greek World from 1,050 to 500 BC

In the year 2008, for the first time in the history of the world, more people live in cities than in villages in the countryside, all across the Globe. This process of urbanization started in Antiquity and an important phase was the ancient Greek city state culture ca. 800 – 300 BC. The project Village to City, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, aims to describe and analyze the development of settlements in topographical and spatial terms in the crucial centuries of development from when no cities existed down to the time when perhaps as many as 1,000 ancient Greek towns and cities dominated the central Mediterranean world.
